April Is For #Vampires: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

When Buffy came out in the summer of 1992, I was just about to start high school. It was the first movie I saw with both horror and comedy elements, which probably account for my taste for such films (one of my favorites being Shaun of the Dead, but I couldn't include that because sadly, there are no vampires!). I was also a big fan of Kristy Swanson and thought this film was awesome! And Pee Wee Herman as a vampire was something I just couldn't miss.

There was also a very popular TV series that followed from 1999-2003 and for some reason, I never watched it. I really couldn't tell you why, because I would think it would be right up my alley, but for some reason I never got on board. I was in college when it came out and it was in the days before DVRs, so if you missed a show, you missed a show and that was that. I tend to not get into stuff if I miss the first shows. Maybe this summer I'll check it out on Netflix.

  1. Oh, man. You are missing out if you've never watched the series. Joss Whedon took Buffy to a whole new level in the show. It massively dwarfs the movie. Especially if you watch it in conjunction with Angel.

I HIGHLY recommend the show. ;)

  2. Buffy started in 1997 and ran for seven seasons, I think the first two were the best and I love the fact that Seth Green appeared in both the movie and TV series but his scenes were cut from the movie but for some weird reason his scene was a still pic on the back of the VHS release.

I can't wait for Bloody Little Secrets to come out.

  3. You must watch the series. It's one of best SF/F shows made, but also one of the best TV shows ever made.

  4. Like you, I missed this the first time round. Now (aged 35!) I do occasionally watch re-runs on TV and I have to admit, I do really enjoy them. They're incredibly cheesy but fun too!

  5. I am right there with you. I LOVED the movie, but never got into the series. It's in syndication on a couple of different networks and I've tried to watch it but just can't seem to get into it. And I don't know why because vampires are awesome!

  6. Best! TV show! Ever! I didn't start watching it until it was over either, which I'm kinda glad of. I didn't have to wait from week to week. You have to watch it. Trust me, you'll like it. You just have to get through the first season. It's very different from the rest of the show.

  8. Buffy was the only "appointment" TV for me. Turn off the phone, don't answer the door -- Buffy was on ;)

I encourage you to watch it from the beginning, and make sure to watch Angel, too.

Whedon is the master of story. Firefly, Dollhouse ... he's just the best.

  9. Buy the boxset of Buffy. Worth every penny. Joss was disappointed with the movie so he removed his name from it and then made the TV show he had wanted the movie to be.
