Adventures in Epublishing: Indie Week in Review

Some great stuff going on this week and I just couldn't wait until the week was over to talk about it...

Traditionally published author Barry Eisler turns down a $500,000 deal to self publish his next book. Read about it here on Joe Konrath's blog (warning: it's a LONG one!):

The EU looks into publishers and ebook prices...are the ebook prices that publishers are charging actually illegal? Publishers' offices raided! (posted by author Sibel Hodge on Kindle Boards)

Man self-publishes ebook "Why The Kindle Will Fail." Check it out for a good chuckle on Tyson Adams' blog:

Amanda Hocking on the verge of $1 Million + book deal with a major publisher:

I have to say it's a great and insane time to be a part of publishing, no matter which side of the fence you're hanging out on. Published authors are turning down traditional deals to go it alone, epubbed authors are picking up million dollar deals with major publishing houses, and publishing houses in Europe are being raided because of the ridiculous prices they're charging for ebooks. The world's gone mad!

I will say that it's an amazing transition that's taking place at the moment, and while I don't think traditional publishing will die a quick death, I think it's not long for this world in it's current form. We are witnessing the transformation of an entire industry at this moment. And in 5 years we'll look back and laugh about how crazy 2011 was in the industry.

As for Barry Eisler's and Amanda Hocking's news, both of them bode well for us indies. They are really giving us indies the credibility we've been hoping for. Barry gives us credibility because he sees what we're doing as lucrative enough to give up a 500K deal. Amanda gives us credibility because a traditional publishing house is recognizing the value and worth of writers that went about things differently and tried something different because it will now make them money.

There is a TON of debate as to whether either of them is really making the 'right' decision regarding their career, but let's be honest, nobody really knows for sure how either of their moves will turn out. But I will say certainly is nice to have options. When I started querying agents 2 years ago, I thought that's all there was for me, my only chance to reach any readers was through New York and they weren't interested. I'd really thought that if I submitted a few more books and was rejected that I might hang it up because as much as I enjoyed writing, I couldn't justify busting my butt day and night to write books that no one would ever read. We all want to say we write for the love of writing, but I write to share stories and that wasn't happening. I'm just so thrilled to have this opportunity to get my work out there and share others work as well.

Connecting to readers and making some money off of it as well is really the best of both worlds and I'm excited to keep tabs on how everyone does. I'll keep you posted!

Adventures in Epublishing: Busy Bee

I've been slightly absent from the blog lately and I'd like to apologize for that. Things have been quite hectic around  here the last few weeks and I'm playing a little catch up. My daughter was sick, I've been sick, I've had manuscripts to edit (both my own and DarkSide authors'), and lots of stress over my job for next year. But now that everything has been ironed out and I'm on Spring Break, I should be able to get back on track.

Just a little round up:

I'm still selling about 3-4 copies of Into the Shadows a day and hoping to maintain that pace. I'm working hard on Bloody Little Secrets edits and I will hopefully have a sneak preview for you very soon. I'm shooting for a May 1st release date, sooner if I can manage it! But I really love this book and can't wait to share it with you.

DarkSide Publishing authors are continuing to do well, and we now have three books available, and a fourth releasing at the beginning of April. I hope you are enjoying all of the great books we offer! Find out more about them at the DarkSide Publishing website

Adventures in Epublishing: DarkSide Updates

We at DarkSide Publishing have a lot going on this month! And since this it is really the wider Adventures in Epublishing, I thought it fit to share how we're doing and what's coming for us in the next month.

As for Into the Shadows, I've had a great month so far. Sales are staying steady at about 2-3 a day, better on the weekends.  I was featured on Daily Cheap Reads last week, which helped me sell 10 copies in one day on Amazon, my second best showing there since my first day blitz where I sold 20 copies. I also hit a ranking for the first time on Amazon, although I don't anticipating that happening for awhile because Amazon's rankings are much harder to reach than those on Barnes & Noble due to the sheer volume of books on Amazon. Which makes this all the more sweet!

• Amazon Bestsellers Rank: #6,319 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
• #93 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Children's eBooks > Literature > Love & Romance

I'm still making the bulk of my sales on Barnes & Noble and DarkSide author Megg Jensen has been doing really well there, hitting #13 on the PubIt Teen Fiction Charts. I was also on the same chart in the 40s, so we had 2 DarkSide authors on the chart. Megg's book Anathema also hit the top 100 of Teen Fiction for NOOKbooks, registering at #98 and was ahead of traditionally published authors like Maggie Stiefvater. Megg is just wrapping up her launch contest and will reveal just how many copies she has sold in the first month. It's very exciting because she's by far exceeding my successes, which is exactly what I hoped for.

Bookaday: Ariana's Pride by Margaret Lake

Ariana's PrideAriana's Pride - Historical Romance

Ariana’s Pride is an historical romance set during the Wars of the Roses. This one decisive battle affected the lives and attitudes of Ariana and Jeremy.

Ariana Devoe is the willful and arrogant daughter of Earl William. What happens when she finds that she has lost her home and family? Will she lose her heart, too, as she struggles to reach the elderly Baron to whom her father has promised her? Or will she throw away her chance to avenge her father’s death and regain her titles and estates to be with the dashing Jeremy?

Jeremy Gowen has lived most of his life in the Earl’s stables, but does not intend to end his days there. Aided by the stablemaster, once a soldier in the King’s service, Jeremy secretly learns horsemanship and sword fighting.

After the attack on her father’s castle, Jeremy finds Lady Ariana, lost and alone. He promises to take her to the Baron, but as their journey progresses, he is no longer willing to turn the woman he loves over to another man. Jeremy holds the secret which could make Ariana his, but he wants her to love him for his own sake.
