Oh, rejections!

I got a bit of bad news this week; the Lovely Agent who was reviewing my full manuscript decided to pass.  While I understand the process and what little time they had, I was a little frustrated by the 90% form letter I received with it.  LA did say some nice things about me as a writer, but I guess it wasn't enough this time around.  That's okay, this is the nature of the business.

So where to go from here?  Well, I am lucky in the sense that I'll be off work in a couple of weeks (teacher - will be on summer break) and I have some time to contemplate the situation.  My approach for this novel was to send out about 10 queries and then reevaluate the MS before querying again.  I did some nice revisions before sending it off to LA, but perhaps I'll give it another read before querying again.  It did have some good stats for the first 10 subs, 1 partial and 1 partial/full request.  The positive things that were said included that LA 'liked the concept' and that I was a 'solid writer - very commercial.'  The only complaint was that LA didn't connect with the MC the whole way through.  So maybe if I read it again I can see why.  I also had some great notes from my critique partners, most of which I implemented during the revisions.  There were 2 major things I had considered changing, so I will have to make the decision on whether or not I want to do a full rewrite.  I'll post later on when I decide what I plan to do!

Don't ever let rejections get you down.  Try to use the process to help you and your writing improve.  I've heard that persistence will pay off!  Fingers crossed!

  1. It took me a year to find an agent, and four years to get my first book published. It's called Swiss Chocolate: A memoir of school in Switzerland. It's listed on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, although it won't be available until August.

Keep trying. I suggest you get an editor. Susan Mary Malone is one of the best in the business. She edited my manuscript. www.maloneditorial.com

    Good luck.

  3. Ah, rejections. Blech! But I think you're doing the right thing. And if they liked your concept and think you're a strong writer, that's a brilliant starting point for more queries. Good luck!
