April Is For #Vampires: Vampire Diaries

When it comes to Vampire Diaries, the TV show, I am a complete and total fangirl. It is hands-down my favorite thing on TV. I cannot get enough of this show! I'm always looking forward to the next episode. I really think the writers on this show are amazing and they manage to make every show exciting and surprising. The characters are all quite lovable, whether they're just hanging out or ripping someone's throat out. My absolute favorite character has to be Damon Salvatore, played by the AHHHH-MAYYYY-ZING Ian Somerhalder. I wonder if they'll ever consider making a Vampire Diaries movie? That would be awesome!

I have also read some of the original Vampire Diaries series, by L.J. Smith, and I have to say I don't hold the same love for the books. Perhaps if I had read them in the 90s when they originally came out, I'd have a different view of them. After watching the show, reading the books was like going back in time, in a bad way. Most of the character names and some of the setting is taken from the book, but there is SO much that is different, it's almost distracting to read. My biggest complaint is that the book reads like it's from another time. Many of the names that were changed were old-fashioned and it was obvious that the time-period is twenty years ago. I read the first two volumes and it was okay, but by the third volume, the book got so ridiculous, I had to put it down.

There is also a new series of Vampire Diaries, which follows Stefan's perspective starting when he and Damon become vamps. I think this would be a more interesting read being that it follows the characters as we know them and through the backstory that was set up in the show, which I actually like better than the original. I'm looking forward to reading them over the summer and may just buy the paperbacks so I can have Damon's and Stefan's beautiful faces on the covers!

  1. Hi Karly! I am probably as big a fan as you are of the TV show. Can't get enough of it! And Damon is my favorite, too. (who doesn't love a bad boy?)

As for the books, I read them in the 90's when they first came out and I thought they were just okay then. I read them again just before the show started and have to say I was a little disappointed at first by how fast the show moved compared to the books. Now I'm just disappointed in the books.

I love what you're doing with the vampires. can't wait to see what you blog about next. And for Bloody Little Secrets to come out.

  2. Another huge Vampire Diaries fan here! I was inspired enough by this TV show to start a book series. Thursday nights are the most exciting of the week! And Damon is a GOD.

  3. Not a relevant comment, but when you referred to the 90's as 20 years ago, at first I thought you did the math wrong--because it couldn't possibly be that long ago. Then I realized it's true, the 90's were 20 years ago, and I felt SO OLD. :)

I'm really enjoying your vampire-related posts. They're very interesting, and I'm learning a lot!

  4. Glad I'm not alone in my obsession! And Maria, it totally makes me feel old! It's kinda cool that things we like seemed to have followed though. I mean, even if VD isn't quite the same, like Erin said, it's not like the books were the best ever, so it's making something old new and better!

  6. Love love LOVE it! :) You know Imma total fangirl too, Karly. Lol. And I am right there with ya, I'm totally Team Damon, and he is FOR SURE my most favorite character & the best thing on that show!!! Ian Somerhalder, besides being freaking gorgeous & sexy, is so amazingly talented. Can't wait to see what he'll do in the future, acting-wise. And I completely agree about the books! I read three of them & was like WTH?! I couldn't read any more of them after that. I had to give up. And I read them BEFORE the TV series, so you can imagine what I was like when the TV show came on lol, I was expecting total crap and utterly (& happily haha) surprised when I watched the show & LOVED it! So I definitely feel ya about the books, it is obvious that they are quite dated & were written in the 90's....and not in a good way. Also, I had NO idea about the new books!! I'm thinking Imma have to check those out! And when you read them, you'll have to let me know what you think! ;-) Oh, and I agree, I like Damon & Stefan's back story that's set up on the show much better than the one in the books. For sure. I like EVERYTHING better on the show, pretty much! Baha.

  7. I still remember seeing previews for the show and was super skeptical. I figured I was setting myself up for disappointment. I wasn't a huge Twilight fan (which will be discussed next week) but I still gave the films a chance, and was SO sorry I did. I was hoping VD wouldn't end up being some epic fail. But I'm happy I took the risk, it was well worth it!
