Summer of Harry Potter

We've got just 39 days until the end. The end of quite possibly the best book-movie franchise in the history of literature and film. 100 years from now readers and families will continue to enjoy the Harry Potter series, just like many of us did with classics like The Wizard of Oz.

The Harry Potter series and J.K. Rowling have been one of the most influential parts of my journey as a writer, and so, these last few days before the end I plan to celebrate the whole collection. From beginning to end. And I'd love you to join me.

I've done the math...we need to read a Harry Potter book every 5 days to make it in time, and I'd like to cram a viewing of each movie as well.

Starting today, I'll dig into Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and I hope you'll do the same. In five days we'll get back together and chat, see how far we've gotten, talk about our favorite parts of the book and film, commiserate, etc. (Above you can see the picture of my copy of Sorcerer's Stone, along with a matching Harry Potter bookmark, all ready to go!)

In 39 days we'll cover the entire collection, from beginning to end. Be sure to comment below if you want to join in the journey!

  1. What a great idea, Karly! Count me in! (Time to go pull my copy of Sorcerer's Stone off the shelf and get to work.)

  2. Dusted off my copy of Sorcerer's Stone.
By the way, I wonder how many authors were inspired by the Harry Potter series. I know that I got back into writing after a long dry spell because of it.

  3. I have to say, it's really what got me going. The wheels started turning during the years I read them and then I started writing the same weekend I read the last book. Into the Shadows was the result. I owe a ton to this series!

  4. I'm already on page 88 and that was with making some notes for things. Amazing. Loving it!

  5. Count me in as well. It's been a couple years since I read the books. And I know what you mean about being inspired by the books; it's hard not to be with the fantastic world J.K. Rowling gives us. Though for now I'll be working on my own series while reading. Great idea!

  6. I'm actually keeping track of dialogue tags. It's something I've had problems with, and then became super parnoid about. I figure whatever Jo uses will be considered okay if I use them!

  7. Harry Potter had not only created an impact to many kids out there but also to us adults. Ive been able to witness in reading the great works J.K. Rowling had made in transforming one bullied boy to a well-known hero. It would be a great idea to reminisce those scenes. :)

  8. I decided to do this with my 11 year old son. When he was 8 I began reading him the HP books. He became an avid fan. When he turned 9 he read them himself and now has his collection proudly displayed in his room. It is our "thing" we do together. We are now on Goblet of Fire in our quest to reread all the books before "the end" Love this idea!!!!
