Success in Epublishing: Interview With Tess Oliver

As a newly epubbed author myself, I'm amazed by the success of the epubbed YA authors who have blazed a trail over the last year.  In this series of blog posts, I'll be interviewing successful epubbed YA authors.  I'm thrilled to be given the chance to pick their brains and talk to them a little more in depth.  If you have any questions, be sure to leave them in the comments section.

Safe LandingCamilleOur first epubbed YA author is Tess Oliver, who has had great success this year with her two YA titles, Camille and Safe Landing.  I've seen her books on Amazon and Barnes & Noble and saw her mentioned on Joe Konrath's blog as well.  Thanks so much to Tess for participating in our little forum and sharing her story!

How/when did you decide that epublishing would be your path?

I’d been spending most of my spare time writing middle grade and young adult fiction. I went to all the conferences, joined the SCBWI, and talked to the editors and agents at events. I received a lot of encouragement on my manuscript critiques and even some requests to see more, but I always got the same line “no place on our list for your book.” One big NY editor had one of my YA books for a year. Then I received a nice personal rejection from her. It made me laugh. I’d completely forgotten that she had it. I had two agents hold onto the entire manuscript of Camille for nine or ten months. One never responded again and the other finally responded with an email saying the market was already saturated with werewolf books. Have you ever wanted to yell at an email? A coworker and I did get a publishing deal with a big educational publisher for an elementary level science book. It’s written under my real name, but even that publishing credit didn’t get me through any doors. The querying process was like an emotional roller coaster and I needed to get off. Last summer break (I teach) I decided not to write anything new. I was starting to feel rather silly sitting on my computer writing all these stories that no one was going to ever see. And while I had no proof, I was pretty sure my husband was starting to roll his eyes every time I sat down to write. But not writing left a void in my life. I really missed it. That’s when my sister sent me the link to J.A. Konrath’s blog. I became a follower. (Is it just me or is he the hottest guy on the internet right now?) After that my incredibly clever sister sent me a link to Amanda Hocking’s books. She said,” This author is making it big with her YA books. You should give it a try.” So I figured it couldn’t hurt. My brilliant, beautiful daughter designed some covers and we uploaded the two stories I thought would sell the best.

New For 2011 - YA Book Reviews

Recently I've received some requests for book reviews.  I thought to myself...I don't have the time, they're not in my preferred genre, etc. and so I turned them down.  But the more I thought about it, the more I realized I'm already a major book pusher.  If I like something, I'll let you know.  I'll review it on Goodreads, I'll tell everyone I know about it, I'll buy it for family members as gifts, I'll force my friends to take my copy and read it as soon as possible.  And being that I'm always looking for ways to bring more books to readers (the Bookaday program), I thought that I really might be missing out on something.

Adventures in Epublishing: The Importance of Reviews

For a new and unproven author, reviews can be extremely helpful in spreading the word about your book and provide new readers with the confidence that their money is well-spent.  However, I don't believe that they are always a deciding factor.

I currently have 8 very positive reviews on Amazon, and 3 very positive reviews on Goodreads.  These numbers are quite small compared to others who have hundreds of reviews.  I'm very lucky that my readers enjoyed what they read and have given me very positive reviews.  That has hopefully helped new readers choose my book on Amazon.  Yet on Barnes & Noble, where my online sales are beating Amazon this month, I have NO reviews, not a single one.  And people are buying there based on nothing more than the description and the price, I'm guessing.   But I'd love to see if more reviews translate into more sales...if anyone out there has given my book a read, please don't forget to post a review!  It can be our little experiment.

I've been witness to books (not my own) receive some poor reviews and yet still go on to sell excellent numbers, so I think it's interesting that readers are not necessarily deterred by poor reviews.

Fellow ebook authors have also mentioned another way to make your book more visible is to offer it up to book bloggers/book reviewers online and let them post a review.  It appears that many book bloggers have quite a large following, so a good review on one of these sites could be really helpful.  I've submitted to two book reviewers so far, but haven't had a review from either yet.  They get awful bogged down with requests, I'm sure, so it's probably going to take a little while.

What about you?  Have your reviews translated into big sales?  Did you see a boost from having a books blogger/reviewer give your book a thumbs up?  I'd love to hear your success stories!

A Book A Day For The Holidays: Vestal Virgin by Suzanne Tyrpak

Vestal VirginVestal Virgin - Historical Suspense

Elissa Rubria Honoria is a Vestal Virgin--priestess of the sacred flame, a visionary, and one of the most powerful women in Rome. Vestals are sacrosanct, sworn to chastity on penalty of death, but the emperor, Nero, holds himself above the law. He pursues Elissa, engaging her in a deadly game of wits and sexuality. Or is Elissa really the pursuer? She stumbles on dark secrets. No longer trusting Roman gods, she follows a new god, Jesus of Nazareth, jeopardizing her life and the future of The Roman Empire.

• New York Times bestselling author Terry Brooks says,
“...a writer of real talent...a promising new voice.”

• New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen says,
“Suzanne Tyrpak weaves a spell that utterly enchants and delights. Her writing is pure magic.”

• A torrid tale of love, honor, and sacrifice pitted against horrific acts of murder, betrayal, and depravity. Rife with intrigue and brimming with exquisite detail, Vestal Virgin is a deftly paced masterpiece of historical fiction. I hope Tyrpak is planning another foray into this ancient world . . . and soon!

Adventures in Epublishing: Time to Write

I'm only officially two days in, but I'm enjoying my Writer Break (as I've dubbed Winter Break) immensely!  I've written almost 5,000 words in 2 days, crossing the 30,000 word mark on my latest YA novel, a vampire piece titled Bloody Little Secrets.  Being that I pretty much have no plans for the next two weeks off, I hope to finish this book by the time I have to go back to school.  I've been pretty lucky, I get up around 8 or 9, eat a nice breakfast and head upstairs to write while the husband and daughter spend some quality time together.  It makes me so happy to just sit for an hour (or two, or three...depending on the day) and just get lost in the story.  It makes me daydream about writing being my only job.  Okay, I do daydream about that all the time... I'm sure that's what we all desire in the end, though!

An army of fierce warriors stands in her way, led by the mad and seemingly immortal Warlord. Willow must use every resource at her disposal if she is to save the Prince, even if that means relying on the headstrong and lovesick Private Tamlevar, the inscrutable winged mage Suel, or the dashing but devious Captain Snyde.

Willow has been honing her combat and weaponry skills for over 150 years. Now it is time to put that practice to good use. The fates of four races and two kingdoms hang in the balance.

Adventures in Epublishing: Pricing Experiment

One of the joys of being a master of your own work is the ability to adjust prices, if you see fit.  While I'm confident of my $2.99 pricing at Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, and Smashwords.com, I felt that maybe the price I had set for Amazon UK might be too much.  I went with Amazon's original suggestion and had Amazon UK match the US price, setting the UK price for 2.99 GBP.  The customers there are also charged a VAT (value-added tax) and the total price came to 3.44 GBP.  I've sold ONE copy in the UK, funny enough it was the first copy.

A Book A Day For The Holidays: The Second Virgin Birth by Tommy Taylor

The Second Virgin Birth

Do we have the technology enabling Christ to be born again of a second virgin mother? The book follows the life of a little girl in Alabama who goes completely insane at the age of six and is confined to a state mental hospital. In a strange twist of fate, she is chosen, "by God," to become the mother of his son, the next Madonna in the second coming of Christ. Explore her life as there are those who adore and worship her and there are those who loathe her and will do anything to end her life before her son is born. This story is a true "can't put it down" book.

From the Publisher:
Rarely does a book come along that requires the reader to truly reach down into the depths of their very soul to think and answer questions about their own personal beliefs and thoughts. The Second Virgin Birth is such a book. It explores new ideas and concepts that could affect us all, and would affect us all, if events in the book ever come to pass. This book is a must read, a must discuss, and a must argue over. Prepare yourself to lose old friends and gain new ones.

Adventures in Epublishing: Visibility

I was baffled this week when trying to figure out how my Barnes & Noble sales for the month of December were beating my Amazon sales.  Now I know we're talking small numbers, here, but even small numbers are worth investigating.  This month I've sold 5 ebooks at B&N and only 2 at Amazon.  I am still convinced that Amazon is the king of ebooks and I figure most people with ereaders have Kindles and not Nooks.  So why are my books selling better on B&N?

Adventures in Epublishing: Strategy

There are a ton of sales strategies out there for your ebook: contests, blogging, getting it to reviewers, forcing it on friends and relatives, etc.  But after reading a Joe Konrath blog post regarding Amanda Hocking's ebook success (as well as countless other articles) it's quite clear that the most important thing to do to promote yourself is to WRITE.  And get those books out!

The ebook authors that are selling well are in fact ebook authors that have multiple ebooks available.  The key is, first and foremost, to write an excellent book.  But not just one...many.

A Book A Day For The Holidays: Lisa's Way by Robert Collins

Lisa's Way - Science Fiction

Teenager Lisa Herbert lives in the small town of Mountain View on the planet Fairfield. The "Savage Rain" decades earlier shut down the hyperspace gate and isolated her world. A casual remark from her sister gets Lisa to ask a simple question: “If life was better before the ‘Savage Rain,’ why couldn’’t it be better again?”

That question starts Lisa on a journey. She re-activates Fairfield's "H-gate" and travels to the three worlds nearest her own. She finds that each planet offers her a chance to improve everyone's lives, by hard work, trade, or making friends. She relies on her brains, her compassion, and a little sneakiness to solve the problems she faces. But Lisa realizes that the more she accomplishes, the more she has to do to answer her question.

"Lisa's Way" presents a heroine more interested in reasoning than fighting, and more concerned with doing good than looking good. It's a science-fiction novel for readers tired of the usual "blast 'em up" or techno-babble, yet it's no weepy romance or surrealistic experiment. "Lisa's Way" is just a solid story crisply told. Perfect for pre-teen, teen, and young adult readers!
